A FEW SIMPLE STEPS
Get started
- Open a note in the Notes & code workspace and show the comparison panes.
- Put the original text in Pane A and the edited version in Pane B.
- Choose Compare Diff and navigate the highlighted line differences.
- For JSON structure, choose JSON in both panes and use Compare JSON values.
Open editor takes you to the draft on this page. Paste or open a source file, or choose Try this example. Save to notebook keeps a named copy with your notes. Your workspace style stays unchanged.
Compare text and code as source
Switch to the Notes & code workspace when you need the full tools. Open the comparison panes, place the original in Pane A and the revision in Pane B, then use Compare Diff to highlight changed lines.
Each pane can have its own language mode. Navigate between differences, inspect the exact text, and edit the revision in place. Saved comparison content stays with the note so you can return to it later.
Choose the comparison that answers your question
Text diff is useful for changes to words, lines, formatting, and source code. It does not tell you whether two programs behave the same way or whether a changed SQL query returns the same rows.
For structured data, choose JSON in both panes and use Compare JSON values. That view helps inspect value changes; use the text diff when source layout itself matters.
Keep a copy of both versions
Give the note a descriptive title and export a notebook backup if the review needs to be kept or moved. Work remains in this browser; there is no public comparison link.
Copying one pane over another replaces its current text. Review the direction of a copy action and keep a backup when both versions are important.
A few questions
Does this comparison upload my text?
Text and JSON comparison run in the browser. The note and its comparison panes are saved in local browser storage.
Can I compare files with different languages?
Yes. Comparison panes have separate language choosers. A text comparison still compares source lines, regardless of their language modes.
